Hitting the Trails, Hollywood-Style: Celebrity Secrets
April 23, 2010
Celebs in LA are lucky to live in a place where the weather is warm enough that they can go hiking almost all year long. One of the most popular paparazzi hangouts is the hiking trail in Runyon Canyon, nearHollywood, where stars like Zac Ephron, Jessica Biel, and Drew Barrymore have been spotted. (Can you imagine someone snapping your picture as you’re huffing and puffing, with sweaty strands of hair sticking to your face?!)
Whether you’re a world-class hiker or you prefer short walks around the block, be sure you’re prepared for anything:
- The sun. Sweat can make sunscreen run, so look for waterproof or water-resistant formulas. For oily skin, try Coppertone Oil-Free Sunblock Lotion (SPF 30). Those with dry skin may like Topix Waterproof Hydrating Cream Sunscreen SPF 30 (skincarerx.com).
- Unexpected falls and scrapes. Studies have shown that wounds heal better if they’re kept moist and covered, so take some Band-Aids and antibiotic ointment with you.
- Insects. Keep the bugs away and protect your skin with Coppertone Bug & Sun Sunscreen With Insect Repellent SPF 30, Kiss My Face Sunswat Waterproof Sun Block &Natural Insect Repellent SPF 30, or Off! Deep WoodsInsect Repellent SPF 15.
- Emergencies. You may not want your nature hike to be interrupted by calls, texts, or e-mails, but you should always take your cell phone in case you get lost or hurt and need help.
- Touch-ups. You never know whom you might bump into while you’re in the great outdoors, so tuck a tinted lip balm and a couple of Neutrogena Shine-Control Blotting Sheets into your pocket. (And make sure you put on waterproof mascara before you leave the house!)
Spring-cleaning Your Makeup Drawer
April 12, 2010
If your vanity or makeup drawer looks anything like mine, then it’s overflowing with products — many that you use, but some that you don’t, and some that you can’t bear to part with, even though you know you should (like that year-old fuchsia lip gloss!). Spring-cleaning your makeup drawer is a great way to start the season with a fresh face. Follow these simple tips:
- Check the expiration dates. If any of your cosmetics have expired, toss them. They may be contaminated with bacteria that could end up giving you a skin infection.
- Think about the last time you used the product. If it was so long ago that you can’t remember (or you know but you’re too embarrassed to admit it), go ahead and say good-bye. How many lipstick nubs do you need, anyway?
- Open the makeup containers. If you see mold (ick!), if it smells bad, or if you notice that the product has changed in color or consistency, get rid of it.
- If anything’s dried out, ditch it. This goes for mascara, liquid eyeliner, lip gloss, cream blush, foundation, concealer, and any other liquid-based products.
- Clean the products you’re keeping. Wipe off any leaky bottles of foundation, goopy mascara, or sticky tubes of lip gloss. If your brushes and tools are caked with makeup, it’s time to wash them.
- Make over your makeup area. Get a cosmetics organizer and some cute containers to put your products in. Keep a vase of fresh flowers, an aromatherapy candle, and a pitcher of drinking water with lemon slices, along with a special glass, on your vanity. Make your beauty prep area pretty, so you’ll look forward to doing your makeup in the mornings.
If you need to replenish anything, just be strategic about what you buy so that next year your spring-cleaning ritual will be a breeze.

Lorri Goddard-Clark reveals what the back of a box won’t tell you
By: Emily Hebert
Celebrity hair pro Lorri Goddard-Clark is colorist to Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon. She is also the author of The Hair Color Mix Book: More Than 150 Recipes for Salon-Perfect Color At Home. Here, her must-see tips for DIY hair coloring.
How do you pick the most flattering hair color for your skin tone and eyes?
If you look into your eyes you will see little flecks. If they are golden or yellow, a natural match would be warmer hair colors. If they are bluer or deep bluish black then a natural match would be neutral or cooler tones. To enhance your skin tone, never go more than two shades lighter or darker—this guarantees that you won’t fade or wash away your natural beauty.
When is it okay to do at-home highlights and when should you go to the salon?
When you’re going for a look close to your natural color—for example, you have naturally light brown hair and want some pale honey highlights—DIY kits are fine. But if you want highlights more than two or three shades lighter than your natural color you should see a professional.
What precautions should you take when doing at-home highlights?
Always wear an old button-up shirt. This way you don’t risk highlighting your clothes or ruining your highlights as you pull a tee over your head. And don’t forget to set a timer. It’s easy to get distracted with phone calls, emails, texts, television, reading, etc. Also, after each highlight wipe your gloves off on a towel—this keeps excess product from wandering to hair pieces you don’t want to highlight.
Any highlight application tips you won’t find on the back of the box?
Add one teaspoon of olive oil to the highlight bleach of your choice. I do this in the salon; it won’t affect the performance of the product but it will give it a smoother consistency which yields even prettier highlights.
Hair glazes are more popular than ever. How can you recreate a salon-like glaze at home?
First, choose hair color the same shade as yours—if you have dark auburn hair, choose dark auburn hair color. Next, shampoo your hair, towel-blot, and detangle. Take the developer bottle and pour out half of the developer, adding water in its place; this allows the color to become a standard deposit-only gloss. Mix the color and distribute through your hair. Leave the mixture on for three minutes then rinse, shampoo, and condition for a gorgeous, shiny finish.
What are your hair color trend forecasts for the new year?
Sun-kissed highlights are always in, but I think platinum one-process hair color has made a comeback and will continue to do so. We’ll also be seeing more cyber ’80s dos with touches of wild pinks, blues, greens, and black in unexpected places, as well as luxe all-over color—think richer reds, deeper browns, and glistening blacks.
Color Fashion Trends
January 14, 2010
Colors seen on the Catwalk reflect the tough Economic times so you’ll see lots of dark, deep and nature-inspired colors.
- Black
- Grey: from earthy-grey tints to light grey tones sparkly metallic
- Cream
- Brown: tan, beige
- Red: Crimson red to burgundy
- Orange: Burnt Sienna, deep orange
- Blue: electric blue, mint blue, dark navy blue, teal blue
How to wear the color fashion trends:
Wear them as your key piece clothing; as a black turtleneck sweater, grey chunky cardigan, orange floral blouse or a dress, and balance it with a pair of classic dark blue or black jeans. Luckily, the color trend for fall/winter fashion 2009 are subtle enough to wear to work.
If you want to get the most out of your fall/winter fashion 2009-10 wardrobe budget, you might want to focus on buying accessories in those colors, such as a knit scarf in burnt sienna (orange), beaded jewelry in teal or a suede bag in tan brown.
If you want a more exotic look, accompany the color tones with gold or silver jewelry. The metallic shine remarkably accentuates the beauty in the colors.
